- Be a health buddy. Whether it’s accompanying her to doctor appointments, organizing her medical records, or challenging her to increase her daily steps, good health is always easier to achieve when you have a partner.
- Create a family medical tree. Ask your mom about any medical conditions her parents and siblings have/had, causes of death, etc. Putting it all down in writing can help both your mom and your entire family see health risks of which you need to be aware.
- Help her get a better night’s sleep. Even though sleep needs remain constant throughout adulthood, many older adults find it harder to fall and stay asleep. - Make meals easy. One in four older Americans suffers from poor nutrition. Make healthy eating simple by enrolling your mom in a service that provides fresh, nutritious meals. Some areas even offer a drop-in chef service, where professional cooks come into homes and make meals for the week.
