Keep Your Nutrition Vows: Wedding Survival Tips

The libations are flowing, the passed hors d’oeuvres look amazing, and the wedding cake? Well, let’s just say you wouldn’t mind a tier or two. Wedding receptions can be a minefield of food disasters. Here’s how to stick to your weight loss vows.

  1. Plan ahead. It’s OK to occasionally treat yourself, but you’re not going to the wedding to celebrate the occasion not break your weight loss stride. Be sure to bring healthy snacks (a 100-Calorie Protein Bar or pack of Zippers) or eat a small meal before you go. Then you can have that small piece of cake you’re dreaming of.
  2. Offer to be the designated driver. At a typical wedding reception, you could easily drink almost as many calories as you eat. Saying no to the alcohol can significantly decrease your caloric intake.
  3. Hold a glass. Even though you aren’t drinking alcohol, make sure you still hold a glass of water or some low-calorie beverage, especially during the cocktail hour. After all, it’s hard to balance a plate and fork when you’re holding a glass.
  4. Survey the selection. Decide what you really want to eat (hello pan-seared tuna with lime aioli) and say no to fare that just doesn’t excite you. Or just…
  5. Wait for your entrée. It’s usually heavy on lean protein and veggies. Steer clear of the unnecessary items like the dinner rolls and scrape off any heavy sauces. Better yet, ask if the chef can accommodate your dietary needs.
  6. Keep it small. One 3-inch square of cake with butter cream icing can have nearly 500 calories. Eating just a few bites can save you hundreds of calories.
  7. Dance! A person weighing 155 pounds can burn 205 calories with 30 minutes of dancing. So whether it’s the Electric Slide, the Conga Line, or the Chicken Dance, make sure you are kicking your heels up every chance you get.
